STRUISBAAI

1. OVERVIEW
Struisbaai a popular holiday resort, developing rapidly and well known for the 14km white beach which attracts bathers, anglers, surfers and kite surfers. Fishing is an important economic activity.
2. HISTORIC
There are various explanations for the name of this holiday location: a) according to legend – it’s an old Nederland word that means “huge” for the big beach; b) Name refers to straw or reed huts built by the Khoikhoi; c) More probable explanation is the abbreviated name from “Vogelstruisbaai”.
Hotagterklip:
(“left rear rock”) have been fully restored and proclaimed as national monuments.
Anglican Church:
The small restored thatched church is also a national monument. Much sought after for weddings & services.
Harbour:
Quaint little harbour was built in 1959 and deepened at a later stage and is used today by fishing & ski boats.

AGULHAS

1. OVERVIEW
It's the southern tip of Africa where the two mighty oceans, Atlantic and Indian meet – Cape Agulhas. In 1836 it was officially recognized as the southern most tip of Africa. Agulhas is also known as the “Graveyard of Ships”. Approximately 125 ships have been wrecked along the Overberg coast. Certain items of some of the wrecks can be viewed at the Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp.
2. HISTORIC
The original name of Agulhas, given by early Portuguese navigators was Ponta de San Brandao. From 1502 the name Cabo das Agulhas, meaning “Cape of Needle” was used. The Agulhas Lighthouse is the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa (1848) and is also the only lighthouse museum in Africa. On 1st March 1849 it was lit the first time. Wooden Lady of Agulhas: the origin of this figure head is a mystery. The original figurehead can be seen at the Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp. The one at Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is a fiberglass copy.

SUIDERSTRAND

1. OVERVIEW
A gravel road from Agulhas through the recently proclaimed Agulhas National Park, leads you to this small coastal town, Suiderstrand. It’s approximately 5km in a westerly direction and literally the end of the road in Africa. It’s an untamed coastline and also have a scenic pebble beach, extraordinary birdlife and vast expanses of natural fynbos. Suiderstrand is completely surrounded by the Agulhas National Park. It’s a small residential development – 350 plots, mostly overlooking the ocean. In the midst of Suiderstrand lies Blue Bay Private Nature Reserve with 48 stands on 12 hectares of pristine fynbos.
